On “Would I Lie To You” last night the almighty oblong was mentioned by members of the comedy elite including David Mitchell, Lee Mack and Jimmy Carr.
Initially discussions focused on Jamelia’s apparent revelation that she stole toilet paper from George Michael’s house, with the opposition panel, made up of Lee Mack and Jimmy Carr, trying to work out if she was lying or not. However, the conversation soon turned to the oblong!
Jamelia explained the shape of toilet paper by pointing out a square with her fingers, when asked.
Jimmy Carr quickly exclaimed, “That’s not a square, that’s an oblong!”
David Mitchell responded by justifying his team-mate’s visual explanation of toilet paper, “The toilet paper squares are oblong! They’re referred to as perfect squares, but they’re not perfect squares at all! They’re oblong! They’re definitely longer than they are wide!”
However, Lee Mack had the last word and put David Mitchell down after his perfectly justifiable explanation of the shape of toilet paper, “You’re the only person in the world who notices that it’s an oblong! ‘Excuse me darling, pass me the ruler. I think this is actually an oblong not a square.’”
This just shows that the oblong is now entering the mainstream. If TV comedians are talking about the shape then it’s only a matter of time before it’s on everyone’s lips! The future’s bright my friends, the future is oblong!
